The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children's rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. Lithuanian National Committee for UNICEF was established in 1993. Untill 2005 UNICEF implemeted four multilateral programmes in Lithuania. After Lithuania became a donor country in 2005, UNICEF country programme in Lithuania ended. Since 2005 Lithuanian National Committee for UNICEF mobilizes resources for global UNICEF programmes and initiatives, provides the information about UNICEF activities, children and women needs in the world. |more...»
