Lithuania has joined the United Nations on September 17, 1991. A year later the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator (RC) was established in Vilnius.

The United Nations is represented in Lithuania by United Nations funds, programmes and specialised agencies united by the Resident Coordinator system. The programmes, funds and agencies of UN were development partners of Lithuanian government and public society during the transition period and they continue to provide technical assistance and other forms of practical help in the area of social development.
